It’s that time of year again when we celebrate our successes, hide our mistakes, and make outlandish predictions. Here’s one from the Pantone Colour Institute: the shade that will set the mood for 2025 is Mocha Mousse – or brown.
Brown. Yikes! The colour selected in 2012 for plain tobacco and cigarette packaging in Australia, after market researchers determined that it was the least attractive colour.
According to Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Colour Institute, this year’s choice of brown was inspired by a collective yearning for comfort, indulgence, and shared joy.
“We look to a mellow brown hue, whose inherent richness and sensorial warmth extends further into our desire for comfort and the indulgence of simple pleasures that we can gift and share with others,” Pressman said.
Who knew?
How times have changed
Brown is back in vogue and follows on the heels of Peach Fuzz, the institute’s 2024 pick, described as a light and fruity tone evoking peace and serenity. It may remind some of a certain Body Shop shower gel, whose super-sweet fragrance was, well, more sick than chic. However you may feel about it, it has proved remarkably popular, and peach-hued ’80s interiors are making a comeback.
The previous year’s pick was Viva Magenta, a bright crimson red celebrating unconventionality.
Colours are feelings
Pantone claims Mocha Mousse taps into themes of personal luxury and wellness, perhaps encouraging indulgent moments like savouring a rich cup of coffee or enjoying a peaceful walk in nature. Pantone believes this earthy hue invites reflection and connection.
Pantone is supporting its choice by introducing five curated colour palettes featuring Mocha Mousse, each designed to convey a unique mood and available for download via Pantone Connect.
Pantone has also teamed up with several brands to help bring Mocha Mousse to life elsewhere, including collaborations with Motorola, Joybird, Society6, and Spoonflower.
How the selection was made
Pantone’s colour selection draws from extensive research across fashion runways, interior design trends, cultural moments, and psychological insights. Since its inception in 1999 with Sky Blue, the Colour of the Year has consistently captured the essence of each era.
Time to get busy with a paint brush to create a “harmonious blend of sophistication and comfort, inviting us all to savour life’s simple pleasures while embracing a sense of thoughtful indulgence.”
Brown, is at least, good for hiding dirt.
